I know Discover isn't popular in Canada (pity because I have found it to be one of the best), but anytime I've submitted a claim, I've received a refund, including an eBay seller who misrepresented the quality of the item, and eBay and Paypal refused to do anything. Since posting them, I’ve learned more about this article. At first I was angry about it, especially when I read the part about nobody getting their refunds, since I knew that wasn’t true. After speaking with Ellen Roseman via email, I’ve learned that she wasn’t told that anyone had gotten a refund, so I can’t stay angry with her for writing that. I also know that Liza Drozdov has seen it and thinks it’s fair.

Over a year ago, I took this same story to the Star. As a result of it, several people did in fact get their money back, me being the first one. At the time, Liza and I were suspicious of it because I was the only one. It seemed like they were paying me off to shut up and go away. I started hounding Dauphin with emails and gradually people started posting that they had gotten their money back. I even got an email back from the publisher himself and he wasn’t too pleased with what I had done. Yes, a lot of people never did get their money back, and a handfull of them still continue to complain about it and blame Mike, demanding that he pay them the money they lost, but how many of those people actually sent in their request for a refund when asked. I remember several people telling me that it just wasn’t worth their time.

Even though Mike’s name was on the magazine, I don’t blame him in any way for what happened, and I don’t think that anyone else should either, in fact, in some ways, I feel partially to blame for people not getting their refunds. If I hadn’t taken the story to the Star in the first place, maybe the NFL wouldn’t have pulled their magazine so fast (their announcement on their magazine page actually mentioned the article in their list of reasons for pulling out), and then maybe everyone would have received their money back. Right after the NFL pulled their magazine, Dauphin went out of business. At the time though, Dauphin had started doing the same thing to the NFL subscribers that they did to all of us and I knew that they had to be stopped. I do know that Mike and the Holmes Group feel bad about everything. Mike actually said the situation was “frustrating and sad” when I asked him about it, during an online chat. If he does decide to come out with another regular published magazine, I intend to subscribe and I hope that all of his fans will as well. I already knew that they were seriously considering it but hadn’t made any final decisions and were waiting to see how the special 10th Anniversary edition did before deciding. Since it has been mentioned in Ellen’s article, I know that it’s now okay to say that I knew about it.
Belindanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-587948499497941945.post-77524409448353023342013-05-20T13:21:28.422-07:002013-05-20T13:21:28.422-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Belindanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-587948499497941945.post-65811541584800751642013-05-20T13:19:29.123-07:002013-05-20T13:19:29.123-07:00I agree with your comments about the failed Holmes...I agree with your comments about the failed Holmes magazine. I don't really understand why Ellen Roseman bothered to dig up some old stuff.
Mike is smart enough to learn from his mistakes.

Apart from my own subscription I also made a bunch of gift subscriptions to some forum members in the US so I lost a few hundred dollars when the magazine tanked. My reaction at the time was "water under the bridge".

From some of the details I learned at the time I knew it would be a waste of time waiting for a refund.

The so called publisher of the magazine was a scam artist who stiffed his landlord for 5 grand and then moved back to the US where he tried to start up some sports magazine that also ended up going nowhere.

In my opinion Mike should have hired someone with expertise in the publishing business who could've have advised him of all aspects of the business.

Having only editorial controll leaves you vulnerable.

It was not the first time that Mike got involved in something that didn't work as expected & considering how many fingers he's got in the pie now I would suspect it might happen again in the future.

That 10th anniversary publication was a special edition that may, or may not, lead to other special editions or even to a full new magazine.

Jundeenoreply@blogger.com
