Holmes Makes It Right: Labour Of Love

CAUTION...CAUTION...CAUTION... SNARKY POST AHEAD. PLEASE USE ALL APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE GEAR. DUCT TAPE, DRINKING STRAWS, AND HELMETS ARE RECOMMENDED.

Last night, HGTV Canada premiered a brand new episode of Holmes Makes It Right, Mike's new show and follow-up to Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection. The episode was called "Labour of Love." Here's a summary of the episode from HGTV Canada:

Mike Holmes is called in to teach some valuable lessons in construction when a high school student passes away suddenly, and his shop teacher and classmates decide to help the family with some renovations as a school project.

If you're Canadian and you missed last night's episode, you can view it on the HGTV Canada website. If you're from the US, you still have a long wait ahead of you before HGTV picks the show up. A couple of weeks ago, I read on what appeared to be a credible entertainment blog that the DIY network has plans to pick up the show in August 2013, almost a full year after the show's premiere on HGTV Canada in October 2012. Despite this, after Mike's 10th Anniversary Special aired on HGTV Canada last week sans disappointed fans in the US, Mike Holmes posted on Twitter and Facebook this message, geared specifically towards his US fans:

To my fans in the USA - new episodes are coming to DIY Network and HGTV. We are just waiting on an air date! Thanks for all of your support - and patience! You'll know as soon as we do!

The post received over 3,000 "likes," which from my observation is a record number for any individual post on the Holmes Facebook page. Reading some of the comments, it appeared to me that people thought that this was pretty good news. "Good news at last Mike!!!" commented one fan. "Best news I've received all day. Great!" commented another. There were hundreds of comments, all sharing these sentiments. Unfortunately, I am very sceptical at the proverbial bone that Mike threw out to his US audience. In fact, I think this post was a little... *cringe*... disingenuous. I think if the Holmes camp was truly honest with their US audience the post would have read something like this:

SORRY GUYS... WE HAVE NO CLUE WHEN THE SHOW IS GOING TO AIR IN THE US. IT COULD BE NEXT MONTH, NEXT AUGUST, NEXT YEAR, OR MAYBE EVEN NEVER. WE JUST CAN'T TELL YOU, BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW OURSELVES. IN THE MEANTIME, HERE'S SOME YOUTUBE CLIPS TO MAKE YOU FEEL SOMEWHAT INCLUDED. YAY USA!!! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR PATIENCE, AND PLEASE DON'T GET BORED WITH ALL THE HOH RERUNS ON DIY. I HAVE A NEW BOOK OUT IN THE US ABOUT KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS.

Ok, so maybe that was a little snarky and mean. But it's more...*cringe*... honest than what was posted on the night of the special.

In the meantime, enjoy this YouTube clip from the Holmes Makes It Right episode "Labour of Love" entitled "Construction Class Act." Hope it makes you feel included.

  1. Despite the snarkiness...thanks for the daily dose of Canada's and apparently th US's favorite handyman. Saw the clip good one on working with the youth to help out someone near and dear to them. Here's to hoping HGTV brings the show down here to the US.

  2. I don't blame you for feeling "snarky.

I don't understand either why HGTV USA and the DIY network can't be honest & state something straight forward whether they will or won't air the new shows.

Typical corporate behavior. Bombard the customer with advertising but when it comes to provide some meaningful information to a simple questions... that seems to be beyond their ability.

As far as Mike comments from Facebook are concerned, I have my doubts that he posted that. It was probably put there by some flunky from his office.

Mike spends more time travelling, promoting his activities ( he'll be in Germany for the Skills world competition), giving speeches, and on and on.

The only time he's really one on one is when he's doing an on-line chat which happens a couple of time a year.

That first new show yesterday was a real tear jerker (a nice birthday present for my 81st).

It revolves around a Filippina single mother with 3 boys, one of them collapsed & died while playing football on he school team.

The mother had an ongoing problem with water in her basement & the coach of the football team, who was also their shop teacher, decided, alonmg with the entire team, to help fix the problem. They pretty soon realized that to fix the problem was way beyond their ability & the coach approached Mike.

When Mike agreed on condition that the coach & the team would volunteer to help (part of Mike's aim to get young people involved with the construction trades).

The problems they found went way beyond just a bad water leak. This turned into a full fledged house reno. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulation etc. The total bill came to about $ 150000.00

This was a great show to start the season with.

If there was a way of getting it to you I would tape it & send it to you.

I tried to copy/paste the link to the video shown on HGTV here but my curser disappeard from my screen. I guess they thought somebody might try it.

  4. clicking the link doesn't bring it up nor does copy & pasting so you'll have to go to their website http://makeitright.ca & then click on MORE NEWS. Check the 2nd & 3rd announcements.

  5. I watched this episode and cried and cried again because of the generosity of the teacher and his students and of course, Mike Holmes for taking on this project. It truly was a labour of love. More people should be this generous in this world.

    1. Much of the materials are donated, some are paid for by the show aka Mike. The homeowners are asked to pay 20 percent of the costs if they are able to.
