We made our way around the floor and back to the 3M booth. I wanted to sneak a picture with the life size Mike standee that had originally caught my attention, just before spotting Mike milling around! Can hardly wait for 1:30!

Look Who We Just Ran Into!
While scoping out the floor and the 3M booth, I saw a giant life size standee of Mike! I went down to take a picture with the standee, when all of a sudden, I turned around and saw the real deal! Yay!!!!!

Point Load Pictures Casting For Damon Bennett Restoration Co.
Yesterday, Mike Holmes and Peter Kettlewell's television production company Point Load Pictures shared some more information via Facebook about casting for Damon's up-and-coming television series, Damon Bennett Restoration Co. The Point Load Pictures website also announced that they have some "DIY Primers" (short video clips) of Damon in action, which seem to be linked from the Point Load website to HGTV Canada. I'm not sure if the clips have been online for a while or if they are a recent addition -- either way, they're fantastic! I really enjoyed watching them. All in all, they have 16 clips posted, each several minutes in length, showing Damon hard at work performing tasks such installing baseboards, installing laminate, replacing a storm door, and my personal favorite (because it's something I've had to do quite recently), replacing an exterior light.
The only thing I'm sad about is that the chances of the US getting to see Damon's show in the future are pretty much zilch. Watching these clips and seeing Damon being able to do what he does without Mike is really different, in a good way.
Regarding the casting announcement, Point Load Pictures posted this to their website:
ARE YOU LOOKING TO RESTORE A ROOM IN YOUR HOME BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL GLORY?Do you own a home with interesting historical attributes? Are you looking to restore one room or area back to its original glory? Do you live in the GTA? We would love to hear from you for our new concept with Damon Bennett.
We’re looking for houses of all time periods and eras to restore: Victorian, Georgian Colonial, American Craftsman, Queen Anne, Edwardian, Mid Century Modern, etc. We want energetic, enthusiastic homeowners with homes that deserve to be brought back to what they once were. What are the architectural features of your home that you love and want to see restored?
Please send us an email at
casting@pointloadpictures.com and tell us your story (250 words or less) along with a few photos of your home and yourself.
Please include ‘Damon Bennett Restoration Co: Homeowner’ in the subject line.
The DIY Primers can be found on the Point Load Pictures website here.
Here's some screen shots of Damon doing what he does best. I am pleasantly surprised how well he does by himself in his own element. He really takes command and shines as a leading man! I always knew Damon was talented, but I didn't realize just how charismatic he was. He certainly won me over big time, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for Damon Bennett!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOLMES SPOT BLOG!!!
Can you believe it? It's been an entire year since the Holmes Spot went online for the very first time. Boy, how time flies! One year ago today, I started the Holmes Spot blog not knowing who, if anyone, would want to read it. The only thing I knew for sure was that all of my friends and family were ducking me on Facebook because every time I logged in, I would share some random article or video about a big bald Canadian in overalls that none of them had ever heard of. It was starting to have a detrimental effect on my social life, so to save myself the trouble of having to make all new friends, I started this blog.In the beginning, I had a lot of questions about what purpose this blog would serve. But with each passing month, I watched the number of readers grow to a sizable crowd. Several times over the last year I've seen my research used in various articles and publications. I've even seen a popular Canadian TV show swipe some exclusive photos directly off this site and use them in their broadcast. The thought that people are finding what I do here to be useful and worth referencing makes me really happy. I'm excited that I can have a small, but positive, impact on Mike's larger-than-life world!
Thank you so much to everyone who takes time out of their day to read the Holmes Spot. Thank you to those who post thought provoking comments and critiques. Thank you to those who fact check me and email me when I post something inaccurate. Without all of you, I'd be sitting in front of the computer, talking to myself. And many thank to the Holmes Group for allowing me to do my thing.
In honor of this momentous occasion, The Holmes Spot blog presents...
THE HOLMES SPOT BLOG'S TOP TEN FAVORITE ENTRIES OF THE YEAR
#10 MIKE HOLMES ANSWERS HIS CRITICS
#9 CANADIAN RHAPSODY
One of the biggest joys in my life is animation. I've been making old-school cut-and-paste "South Park" style cartoons for years. I have won awards and received accolades for my crappy little cartoons, some of which have millions of views on YouTube! In September of 2012, I officially announced a follow-up to the cartoon I made as a present for Mike on his 49th birthday. "Canadian Rhapsody" is still in the works, and will be released just in time to celebrate Mike's big 5-0! This is one of my all time favorite entries of the year because before I announced the new toon, I had to create several "teasers" to pique people's interest. The resulting images were hilarious, and I received lots of positive feedback! View the official announcement here.
#8 MIKE HOLMES FAN FORUM CLOSED
#7 HOLMES MAKES IT RIGHT PETITION
I admit that I am not the most patient person in the world, so when March of 2013 rolled around and Mike's latest show Holmes Makes It Right had yet to premiere in the US, I decided to protest. With the help of many, I started an online petition, petitioning HGTV/US to air Mike's new series. In subsequent days, however, I learned that the DIY network, not HGTV, would most likely be the network that would eventually air the show -- in August. The petition is still open to signatures, however, as nothing has been officially confirmed by the Holmes camp. You can read all about the petition here. Feel free to sign it too if you're so inclined.
#6 BAKE IT RIGHT
This last Christmas, I really wanted to do something special, not just for Mike and his crew, but also for all of the people out there who read the Holmes Spot. From somewhere, I got the idea to recreate the entire crew of Holmes Makes It Right in gingerbread. My only problem? I'm not a cake decorator, and I'd never baked a gingerbread cookie in my life. But, with a little patience (which I have none of) and a whole lot of royal icing, I really dolled those little cookies up. I have no idea how they came out looking so cute, especially Mike's cookie. His cookie was totally adorable, complete with diamond earrings and a big fat wristwatch. #5 MIKE HOLMES BIOGRAPHY PAGE

#3 THE SEX APPEAL OF MIKE HOLMES
Mike Holmes is not just a contractor, he's also a very attractive man. I don't have to explain to anyone how a competent, charismatic man with a big chest and even bigger biceps could be so damn sexy, but I did anyway. In drooly, fangirlish fashion, I explored all the nuances of Mike's sex appeal in this Holmes Spot exclusive, while still managing to remain tasteful. This was definitely one of my favorite blog posts of the year because it was just so much fun to write! I apologize to all the guys out there for this slobbery tribute to the man behind the overalls ;-) You can read my exclusive article on sex appeal of Mike Holmes here. A drool bucket and/or oversized beach towel to wipe your chin is optional but recommended.#2 HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE!
Turning 49 may not be a milestone per se, but every year God grants us is a year to celebrate! In February 2012, my husband and I decided to watch the South Park movie for the first time in years. One of my favorite scenes in the movie was when the South Park boys sang the song "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" The song is funny because its a gratuitous tribute to a seemingly random person. It made me think for a moment "Gee, Mike Holmes deserves an absolutely ridiculous, gratuitous fan song too!" The next day, I was sitting at the piano, cranking out a tune. I jotted down some lyrics, and six months later, the Mike Holmes Cartoon was born, just in time for Mike's birthday! Posting this cartoon on Mike's birthday was one of my favorite entries of the year because there was so much anticipation leading up to it. I finished the cartoon just days before the August 3rd deadline. It was also my singing debut... and I can't sing at all. Neither can my husband, who provided some male vocals, but we managed to knock out an acceptable track or two after many, many takes. I was really proud of the finished product, and Mike approved of it as well. He posted the cartoon on his Facebook page and it even made the MakeItRight.ca news feed! (Wow!) Mike even stated that the gift was better than getting to blow up a mountain, referring to "Rocky Reno," the episode of Holmes on Homes where Mike got to set off an explosion in a granite quarry on his birthday. According to my husband, it's a pretty big deal for a guy to refer to anything as better than explosives! I'll take his word for it. You can read about my zany birthday gift to Mike here and here.#1 INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTY BONSTELL

Mike Holmes Recognizes Electrical Safety Month
May is National Electrical Safety month in the US, and Mike Holmes is taking a moment to reflect on its importance. As Mike stated in the article below, he doesn't do his own electrical work - he hires an electrician to do it for him. If Mike Holmes won't do his own electrical work, chances are you shouldn't either. Bad electrical work is not only dangerous, but potentially disastrous, and can lead to fires or worse. My favorite part of the article is his discussion of GFI outlets (or "GFCI" as Mike Holmes refers to them), what they are, and where they are typically installed. Anybody who's ever used an electric hedge clipper and accidentally snipped the chord (me!) can can appreciate the importance of installing GFIs on all outdoor outlets. Lastly, if you're going to do electrical work, make sure that the electrician you hire gets all the proper permits.

Electrical Safety - By Mike Holmes

I know some contractors and handymen offer to “do the electrical” as part of the job—to help homeowners save some money. But they usually save money by cutting corners, like not getting the proper permit. Is it worth the risk to save a few dollars? Absolutely not.
For any renovation, all electrical work must be done right before the drywall goes up. If not, dangerous mistakes can be hidden in your walls—potential disasters just waiting to happen.
And remember to think ahead. What will you need in the future? Do you have enough outlets? Are they located where you need them? This is especially important when it comes to kitchen renovations. Or let’s say you want a hot tub. You might not be able to afford it now, but now’s the time to plan for it. The average home today needs at least 100 amps. But you might want to upgrade to 200 amps, depending on your plans.
A complete overhaul of your home’s wiring is expensive. But sometimes all you need are a few simple upgrades–usually minimum code requirements, like installing ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) near water sources and arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) in bedrooms.
GFCIs should always be installed in outdoor outlets, bathrooms, kitchens, crawl spaces and unfinished basements. They’re inexpensive and could save your life.
Let me give you scenario: A bare wire inside an appliance touches the metal case. The case is now charged with electricity. If you touch the appliance with one hand and a grounded metal object, like a water faucet, with your other hand you will get a bad shock—it can even kill you. But if the appliance is plugged into a GFCI outlet, the GFCI will sense the change in current and shut the power off.
Another thing to keep in mind is to never alter plugs to make them fit into an outlet. It’s a huge safety hazard. If they don’t fit it’s for a reason. If you can’t plug an appliance into an outlet, the outlet is probably outdated. Always have a qualified electrician replace your outlets.
It takes years of training to become a licensed electrician. Why would you trust anyone who doesn’t know what they’re doing? Or someone who knows just enough to mess it up? If you need electrical work done, always call a licensed professional—and get a permit! No exceptions. Because when you make it right, you make it safe.

Holmes Makes It Right: A Lift Up
On last night's episode of Holmes Makes It Right, Mike and his crew help Maya, a little girl born with cerebral palsy, and her family after the one of a kind wheelchair lift they install doesn't work at all.
As one would expect from Mike and his crew, even the smallest details of the job were important, including color. Especially color. In this video, the crew fight hard to pick a color that works just right for Maya's new bathroom.
Mike Holmes made a comment about the video via his Facebook page:
Now this one made me laugh! I'm always most concerned about what's behind the walls. But its also important to make sure that the design (lipstick & mascara) of a room fits the homeowners too.

May is National Electrical Safety month south of the border. It might not be an official Canadian event, but since most home renovations involve some electrical work, electrical safety is always a top priority.
